How I tested the Sig Tango MSR 1-6×24

My test platform was a 16″ BCM RECCE-16 in 5.56 NATO with the included Alpha-MSR cantilever mount. Testing spanned several months across multiple range sessions using Federal 55gr FMJ for volume work and Hornady 62gr ELD Match for precision.

The box test confirmed turret tracking. I dialed known clicks in each direction, shot groups, and returned to zero. The Tango MSR came back within 0.2 MOA both times.

For close-quarters testing, I ran draw-and-engage drills at 10 yards with both eyes open. Any distortion or hunting for the sight picture shows up immediately here.

At 6x, I assessed edge clarity and chromatic aberration while checking BDC holdovers against my 62gr load out to 300 yards. Illumination got tested in direct sun, overcast conditions, and low light at dawn and dusk.

The glass surprised me. I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much from a mid-tier LPVO with a mount thrown in. But running 3-gun stages at 1x with both eyes open felt natural. No distortion. No tunnel effect. Just a clean image that stayed out of my way when speed mattered.

At 6x and 300 yards, the center stays sharp enough to make hits count. There’s some softening toward the edges, but that’s the trade-off at this price point. Every scope in this bracket makes that compromise.

The Strike Eagle sitting on my other rifle showed similar center sharpness, though its wider field of view gave it a slight edge during transition drills.

The DEV-L reticle was clearly designed by someone who actually shoots ARs. That thick horseshoe at the bottom catches your eye fast when you’re moving through close targets. Then you’ve got that precise center crosshair when you need to slow down and make a shot at distance.

I spent a few sessions specifically working the MRAD subtensions at 6x. The holdovers lined up with real impacts more often than not. That’s not something I can say about every budget reticle.

One thing to know going in: this is a second focal plane scope. Your holdover marks only work correctly at max magnification. Run it at 3x and those hash marks won’t mean what they’re supposed to mean. Not a flaw, just how SFP works.

The eye relief measures out to about 3.5 inches. On a standard AR build, that works fine. But the eye box is tight. Tighter than I’d like.

I remember one particular drill where I transitioned from prone to kneeling a bit too fast. My cheek weld drifted maybe half an inch. Suddenly I was staring at black edges instead of targets. Took me a few sessions to really lock in a consistent position.

Low light performance is decent for what you’re paying. I pushed some drills right at sunset when everything gets tricky. The illumination helped bridge that gap between “can see” and “can see well.” It won’t replace a night optic. But for that golden hour at the range when the light goes weird, it earns its keep.

The turrets are where this scope really earns points. Those clicks have substance. You can feel them through gloves. You can hear them on a noisy range. That matters when you’re dialing adjustments and need to know each click registered.

I ran the full box test twice because the first result seemed too good. Dialed up, shot. Dialed right, shot. All the way around. Both times it came back to zero within a quarter minute. That’s the kind of reliability that lets you trust your rifle.

The illumination dial sits on the left side of the body. It works. It’s fine. But reaching for it during a drill felt awkward every single time. My thumb would hunt for it, fumble the rotation, overshoot the setting I wanted. Eventually muscle memory kicked in, but it took longer than it should have.

This scope got dragged through some rough sessions. One particularly miserable morning, rain started about twenty minutes into what was supposed to be a three-hour range day. I kept shooting. The scope kept working. Checked zero afterward and it hadn’t moved.

Accessories

The factory lens caps do their job, but flip-ups make a noticeable difference when speed matters. In competition, fumbling with lens caps costs time you can’t get back.

A quality quick-detach mount is worth considering if you plan to move this optic between rifles. The included mount works, but it’s not designed for frequent swapping.

The Sig Tango MSR does what it promises. It holds zero, the reticle makes sense for AR work, and that included mount saves you a purchase. The tight eye box frustrated me more than once during testing, and the fixed parallax means what you get is what you get. If your fundamentals are solid, these won’t bother you much.

The Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6×24 Gen 2 costs less and brings Vortex’s VIP warranty along for the ride. That warranty alone changes the math. You can literally run the scope until it breaks and they’ll replace it, no questions asked. The wider field of view showed up during side-by-side testing. Moving between targets felt noticeably smoother on the Strike Eagle. Illumination gets washed out in bright sunlight, but honestly, the Sig has the same problem.

The Primary Arms SLx 1-6×24 Gen IV doesn’t get talked about enough. That ACSS Aurora reticle packs BDC, wind holds, ranging, and moving target leads into one design. Some people find it busy. I find it useful. The 4-inch eye relief is the most forgiving of this bunch by a wide margin. If you struggled with the Sig’s tight eye box like I did, the Primary Arms might be worth your attention.

The Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 lives in another world entirely. The glass is stunning. The electronic level and motion sensor tech are features you didn’t know you wanted until you’ve used them. At four times the Strike Eagle’s price, nobody is calling this a value play. For a typical range or competition build, you’re paying for capability you won’t use. But if you need the best, this is it.

To Summarize

The Sig Tango MSR 1-6×24 holds its own. That included mount narrows the real price gap with the Strike Eagle more than the sticker prices suggest. The glass works. The reticle makes sense. Zero retention is dependable. I’d run this on a serious rifle without hesitation.

But when I’m handing someone a single recommendation from this lineup, the Sig’s tight eye box and fixed parallax keep nagging at me. The Leupold is fantastic but priced for people who already know they want it. The Primary Arms is a sleeper pick for ACSS believers.

My recommendation is the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6×24 Gen 2. It costs less than the Sig, offers a wider field of view, delivers equally true 1x performance, and Vortex’s VIP warranty backs it for life without conditions. The Sig is good enough for most shooters, and that included mount does close the gap. But the Strike Eagle’s combination of proven performance, superior FOV, and the most shooter-friendly warranty in the industry makes it the one I’d put on my own rifle.

  2. I am intrigued. I have heard the glass is very clear on these, and capped turrets are absolutely mandatory on anything that’s going to be used in the field, as opposed to from a bench only. I don’t have the expectation that an LPVO is going to have much of an eyebox at max magnification. It’s pretty much unavoidable due to the laws of optics. All of this is to the good, to my way of thinking.

    On the other hand, bullet drop compensating reticles mean that the scope is absolutely, inseparably wedded to one and only one height over bore, one and only one caliber, one and only one cartridge. Maybe if you’re purchasing optics for the Big Army and you know in advance that every single one of them is going to get bolted onto a flattop M4, nothing else, using a lower third cowitness height mount, nothing else, and issued with M855 Ball, nothing else, it’s very practical. This is, of course, assuming that the reticle’s holdovers were calculated with a G7 ballistic coefficient matching that of the bullet design and velocity as measured from the actual firearm. Many such reticles are, past around 300m, fantasy bearing no resemblance to reality because they were calculated using the ammo manufacturer’s inflated velocity numbers and an even more inflated G1 ballistic coefficient “estimated” by the marketing department. This is why I have a strong preference for mrad Christmas tree reticles and mildots, even for a .22 I plink with at the range.

    The permanent bolt-on mount is another point against it.

    You have to be able to remove the optic to get to the BUIS. This is non-negotiable. A permanent bolt-on mount that can’t be removed quickly in the field is a deal-breaker, regardless of whether it was CNC machined out of mithril by Alberich the Dwarf King himself. This is before we consider how many rifles won’t even fit in the case with an optic installed.

    Lastly, every optical design is a compromise. There is no magic solution that does everything really well. An LPVO isn’t ever going to be as good for fast work at close quarters as a red dot. I understand this. It’s never going to be as good for slow, deliberate long-distance work as big glass with big fixed magnification, a big objective lens, and adjustable parallax. An LPVO is the current second-best at both of those. But a second focal plane reticle makes all the LPVO’s weaknesses much, much worse, giving you absolutely nothing in return other than slightly reduced manufacturing costs.

    No. Really. With a second focal plane reticle, you can have either:

    a simple, clean reticle that’s good for fast work in close, like maybe an illuminated etched glass 1 mrad dot with nothing else present would be

    OR

    a reticle with rangefinding capabilities, holdovers, target lead indicators, wind hold points, and so on, that make it useful for long shots

    That 1 mrad dot does absolutely nothing to help you make shots past battlesight zero distance. The reticle with all the hash marks is so cluttered that it’s a detriment for close work and you’d be better off using the irons. With SFP there’s no other way to do this. Any feature the reticle has that’s helpful for distance shooting works against you for close work, and vice versa.

    With a first focal plane reticle you can have all the holdover points you want, made out of nice thin 0.05 mrad lines that disappear when you smash the throw lever back to 1x. You zoom out, “away from” the FFP reticle at the same time and to the same degree as to the target area. With a properly designed FFP reticle this will expose additional reticle features not visible when it’s cranked up to full magnification, like a great big thick ring, or great big thick arrowheads at 3:00 and 9:00, that make the LPVO as viable at 1x as it is at 10x.

    Mind you, this isn’t the only possible compromise. There are a lot of guys sticking tiny little pistol red dots on top of LPVOs, piggyback fashion. The obvious penalties here are weight and cost. Maybe a little less obvious is having to break your cheek weld to try to use an optic that’s got its sighting axis 4″+ above the bore axis. This is not something I’d want to have to depend on while people were trying to kill me, but what do I know?

    I have also noticed that the piggyback dot defeats the purpose of the LPVO in the first place. If you’re running a DMR type setup and you’re willing to put a tiny, fragile, probably expensive little open emitter red dot on top of the main optic to use in the event that everything goes wrong, your position is being overrun, you have decided that the extra ounce and a half of a polymer BUIS was just too much weight, and you have to repel boarders, why have an LPVO at all? Why have a variable optic at all? If you’re going with the piggyback dot, there’s no longer a reason to have anything other than a fixed 10x or 20x optic as the main sighting system upon which you will depend. The airsoft larpers at Reddit don’t like it when people point this out, but maybe I’m not an expert. I’m just an opinionated hobbyist on the Internet. It is entirely possible that I’m taking crazy pills here.
