Why should you trust me
I’m Richard Douglas, founder of Scopes Field, and I’ve spent 15 years testing and reviewing optics across multiple platforms. My expertise with the Leupold VX-R comes from mounting it on various rifles and using it extensively in both tactical and hunting scenarios.

I purchase all my test products independently to maintain objectivity—no manufacturer sponsorship or free samples here. My evaluations combine range testing, field use, and systematic measurement protocols. I’ve published over 200 optics reviews and contributed to major firearms publications, focusing on practical, real-world performance rather than just technical specifications.
For this review, I spent three months testing the VX-R in varying conditions, from dawn hunts to precision shooting sessions. I’ve compared it directly against similar scopes in its price range, including the Vortex Viper PST and Trijicon AccuPoint.
Beyond my personal experience, I regularly contribute to industry publications and have trained both military personnel and civilians in optics selection and use. I stay current with the latest developments in scope technology and maintain relationships with manufacturers without letting that influence my reviews. When I recommend a product, it’s because it’s proven itself through rigorous testing and real-world use.
How I tested the Leupold VX-R
I mounted the VX-R on my Remington 700 in .308 Winchester for this evaluation. My testing protocol focused on real-world performance across different lighting conditions and shooting scenarios. The scope underwent a three-month testing period that included both range time and field use.

For accuracy testing, I used a combination of Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr and hand-loaded 175gr Sierra MatchKing rounds. I conducted box tests at 100 yards to verify tracking precision, shooting five-shot groups at each cardinal point. The scope tracked consistently, returning to zero without deviation.
Low-light performance evaluation took place during dawn and dusk, comparing target visibility against known reference points. I tested the illumination system’s eight brightness settings in varying ambient light conditions, from bright daylight to near darkness. The motion sensor technology got thorough testing through multiple range sessions.
Durability testing involved temperature cycling from 20°F to 90°F, verifying zero retention between temperature extremes. The waterproof claims were verified through exposure to heavy rain and artificial fog conditions. I also tested the scope’s ability to maintain zero after repeated removal and reinstallation using the same mount.

Glass Clarity & Reticle

The index-matched lens coating system delivers exceptional clarity—I’ve tested this scope in varying light conditions from dawn to dusk. The proprietary coating on each lens creates an HD-quality image that rivals premium European optics.
The FireDot reticle features eight brightness settings that adapt seamlessly to different lighting conditions. During a recent low-light shooting session, the illuminated center dot provided quick target acquisition without washing out the target.

Eye Relief & Eye Box

The 4.1 inches of eye relief at low power proves generous enough for high-recoil rifles. I’ve tested this extensively on my .308 platform, and the eye box remains forgiving even during quick target transitions.

The exit pupil measurement of 9.8mm at low power provides excellent light gathering capability. Even in challenging positions, I maintain a full sight picture without straining to find the sweet spot.
Durability

The aircraft-grade aluminum construction has withstood repeated field use. The scope’s argon/krypton waterproofing system passed my submersion test with zero internal fogging or moisture intrusion.

The scope maintains zero even after significant recoil cycles. The one-piece tube design provides structural integrity that’s evident when handling the scope—no hint of internal movement or component looseness.
Elevation & Windage Knobs

The exposed turrets deliver precise 1/10 mil adjustments with tactile clicks. During my testing, return-to-zero accuracy remained consistent through multiple adjustment cycles.

The zeroable turrets make field adjustments straightforward. I’ve found the 90 MOA adjustment range more than adequate for long-range shooting scenarios, with reliable tracking throughout the adjustment range.

Magnification & Parallax
The 3-9x magnification range proves versatile for most hunting scenarios. Image clarity remains consistent throughout the power range, though the lack of parallax adjustment becomes noticeable at higher magnifications.
The second focal plane reticle maintains its size regardless of magnification setting. This feature helps maintain precise holdovers, particularly useful when engaging targets at varying distances.

Mounting & Accessories
Factory accessories are basic—you’ll want to upgrade for optimal performance.

Very straight forward. That is appreciated.
Boy, I wish I could find one.
I have one for sale
Do you still have it for sale? is it the 3-9? How much are you asking?
Do you still have it?
Cannot eliminate parallax on a magnified scope. Can only eliminate the ability to adjust parallax by eliminating the parallax adjustment knob or dial.
Have the 2-7×33 ballistic firedot on an MVP 223. Fantastic. The only criticism is that centre reticle obscures fox sized targets at ranges beyond maybe 150 or so. Impossible to take humane shots. But for closer, larger, or running targets it’s as close to perfect rifle scope combo you could possibly ask for.
I have 3 Sig 516z,
#1 VX-R 1.25-4×20
#2 VX-R 2-7×33
#3 VX-R 3-9×40
I reckon I like em.
I recently bought a VX*R 1.25 X 4 20mm used, the reticle does not move when adjusting.
I’ve sent it in for warranty, we’ll see how this plays out.
