Which one is better: Burris Fastfire 3 or Vortex Venom?

I wanted to find out.

So I bought both red dot sights and hand-tested everything: reticle, battery life, durability, field of view, and so much more.

By the end of this Burris Fastfire 3 vs. Vortex Venom review, you’ll know which red dot is perfect for you.

Let’s get started.

Burris Fastfire 3 Red Dot

The Burris FastFire III is solid.

It puts an unmistakable red dot at the point of impact within your field of view, giving you an immediate advantage in speed and accuracy.

The lightweight construction and durable design can be used as a primary sight or paired on top of an existing sight, like a Burris AR-536 prism sight

The automatic brightness sensor can be adjusted to match the environmental conditions, or the shooter can choose one of three manual brightness settings.

Next, we got two MOA optics: 3 and 8. You might be wondering:

What is the difference between 3 MOA and 8 MOA red dot?

Choose 3 Minute of Angle (MOA) dot for pinpoint accuracy (popular on rifles).

Or choose an 8 MOA dot for fast target acquisition (ideal for short range shooters).

Lastly, the Burris Fastfire III will work with most optics-ready handguns…

…and the shockproof design stands up to years of punishing recoil.

Dot Size

The 6 MOA dot on the Vortex Venom has a distinct advantage since it delivers a crisper target acquisition. The fast acquisition of a moving target makes the Venom a better choice over the Burris.

Weight

In the hands of a seasoned veteran shooter, every 0.1 ounces can impact a shot, as such, the lighter Vortex Venom (1.1-oz) has an advantage over the heavier Burris (1.5-oz).

Field of View

Both the Burris Fastfire III and the Vortex Venom are nearly equal when it comes to this category, but the Vortex Venom has a slight advantage in offering a broader field of view.

Elevation and Windage

The Burris Fastfire III provides a total elevation range of 115 MOA and a total windage range of 86 MOA. Against this, the Vortex Venom comes in with a total elevation range of 130 MOA and a total windage range of 100 MOA, giving this scrappy challenger a clear advantage over the defending champion, Burris Fastfire III.

Quality

Both the challenger and the defending champion are evenly matched in this category, but a slight edge goes to the newcomer. The Vortex Venom offers a lifetime lens coating warranty, giving the Vortex Venom a slight advantage over the champ.

Battery Life

On paper, the battery lives of both scopes looks identical, but looks can be deceiving. The newer Vortex Venom delivers a stronger punch when it comes to a longer battery life.

Which is better Burris Fastfire 3 or Vortex Venom?

After doing the Burris Fastfire 3 vs. Vortex Venom Review, my final verdict is:

The Vortex Venom is better than the Burris Fastfire 3.

Here’s why. It’s got:

  • Lighter weight (1.1 oz.)
  • Longer battery life
  • Easier adjustability
  • More illumination options
  • Slightly wider field of view

So if you had to pick one red dot sight, I’d go with the Vortex Venom. Feel free to give it a try:
