Tritium vs Fiber Optics

While the best pistol red dot sights are a popular norm, standard sights will always be an important feature in any firearm. Generally, there are two types used in replacing factory sights on handguns: tritium sights and fiber optics.

What’s the difference?

Tritium lamps emit a faint green glow, which is visible in low light conditions. It requires no batteries and is always ready to use. Tritium sights are especially helpful for finding and grabbing the gun in the dark so long as you keep the glowing dots facing you.

However, they’re not helpful for daytime.

This is where fiber optic night sights come into play. They don’t generate a light source on their own. After capturing the ambient light of the environment, they glow brightly— without the need for a battery.

During the day, a fiber optic sight can be extremely fast to track with your dominant eye. If you use a weapon light at night, it also works well.

All in all, night sights are great on self-defense handguns during hours of, or in a low light environment. If you’re equipping a handgun strictly for competition shooting or range work, fiber optics would be the way to go.

If you can’t decide, there are rear night sights that combine both. There’s something for everyone!

How to Remove Walther PPQ M2 Factory Sights

Removing Walther PPQ M2 standard sights is relatively easy with the right tools and technique. Before you start, grab a small Flathead Screwdriver and a 1.3mm Allen wrench.

To remove rear sight:

  1. Take your screwdriver and press down on the spring-loaded plunger that’s holding in your windage screw on your rear sight. Slide it off to the LEFT. Sliding it off to the right can cause it to get stuck.
  2. Using the screwdriver, remove the windage screw from the side of the old sight. (Remember, it screws the opposite way of a normal screw)
  3. Install the windage screw on the new sight.

Quick tip:

Count the number of “twists” when removing the original rear sight and turn the screwdriver the same amount of times when installing the new rear sight. So that way your rear sight will be practically on “zero”. (We’ll discuss the installation part more in a bit)

To remove front sight:

  1. First, you need to safely disassemble your pistol. Remove your barrel and guide rod assembly.
  2. Take your Allen wrench and unscrew the front sights. Once it’s loose, you can simply push it out with the wrench.

At the end of the day, you can always head over to the gun shop and get it removed professionally for a small fee.

How to Install Walther PPQ Night Sights

Surprisingly, factory default sights are easy to break: including the plastic stock sights that come with the Walther PPQ M2. Having the best backup iron sights is crucial, especially when your life’s on the line. Even if you buy the most expensive BUIS, proper installation still plays a key factor.

First, you need to ensure that the sight is compatible with your handgun. (Hint: this review has it)

Second, start by removing the factory Walther PPQ night sights per the instructions earlier.

Next, make sure you use a front sight tool. I can’t emphasize this enough. Most sights will have this tool included. If not, I recommend getting the TRUGLO Front Sight Tool.

You will also need the Loctite Heavy Duty Threadlocker.

To install the rear sight, simply push the plunger down and slide the new sight over it. Push it over until you hear a click. Make sure it’s centered properly.

To install the front sight, take your Front Sight Tool and remove the hex screw. Apply some Loctite thread-locking liquid. Insert the locking screws and tighten the front sight properly. It shouldn’t feel loose or wobbly. Let the Loctite dry for 24 hours before you use the pistol.

Take note:

Avoid putting a pool of Loctite into a screw hole. Always drop liquid on the threads of the screw or bolt. If you pour Loctite or sealant into any hole, the incoming screw/bolt can cause compression of the fluid creating a hydro lock thus cracking or distorting the threaded part.

In fact:

I think the Tru-Dot night sight is an absolute steal considering its impressive performance and low price tag.

Also, these night sights are used and trusted by militaries, law enforcement, and professional shooters alike,

If you’d like to know why, keep reading…

Brightness

The Meprolight fiber optic sights are super bright and visible for all kinds of eyes.

MEPROLIGHT TRU-DOT OVERVIEW

The night sight is designed with self-contained glowing Tritium lamps in a three-dot variety.

MEPROLIGHT TRU-DOT DARK VISUAL

The first time I used this night sight in complete darkness, it was slightly overwhelming. Over time, my eyes adjusted to it. But, this visibility is absolutely useful if you’re in law enforcement.

MEPROLIGHT TRU-DOT DARK VISUAL (1)

One drawback:

The Walther PPQ night sights lack photoluminescent paint so they’re slightly dim during the day. It’s a fair trade for the price, honestly.

Windage and Accuracy

The Meprolight delivers pinpoint accurate shots at short distances.

MEPROLIGHT TRU-DOT MOUNTED

The best night sights are advertised as a fixed set, but the night sight is actually adjustable.

On my initial test at the range, my POI was left of my POA. I adjusted the screw a few turns counterclockwise and the night sights were dead-on at 25 yards.

MEPROLIGHT TRU-DOT OVERVIEW

Durability

The Meprolight fiber optic sights come with a sturdy fit and sleek look.

MEPROLIGHT TRU-DOT MOUNTED

The tritium vial is made of glass, not sapphire. So, as long as you’re not banging your pistol every 5 minutes (I hope not), they’ll last you a good while.

The low-profile design also complements the Walther PPQ M2 nicely— just like how the Vortex Venom complements my PPQ Q5.

Mounting & Installation

The Meprolight was easy to install and easy to secure.

MEPROLIGHT TRU-DOT OVERVIEW

The front sight only took me 2 minutes to install. The rear took about 10 minutes.

I’ve read some complaints about them fitting loose on the PPQ M2. The spring-loaded plunger has a notch in it. The windage adjustment screw must lock into that notch in order to secure the rear.

By the way:

I realized that the Meprolight express rear sight is much taller than Walther’s stock hence shooting about 5-6 inches high at 10 yards. I called Meprolight to see if they could suggest a solution.

The representative suggested I replaced the P-99/PPQ (model ML-18801) night sights with the best night sights made for the Walther PPS (model ML-18802) and installed them without the roll spring. This made the night sight work well, if not better.

Why? It features:

  • Quick and easy installation
  • Weather-proof construction
  • Self-illuminated Bright Tritium
  • Unmatched performance in low light conditions

Plus, Meprolight offers a 12-year warranty on the tritium illumination and a one-year warranty on manufacturing defects.

Regardless if you’re a beginner or a professional shooter, the Meprolight is the best rear sight you can buy.

2. Trijicon Night Sight Set for Walther PPQ Pistol: Best Night Sight

If you’re familiar with the brand Trijicon, then you already know where I’m going with this.

The Trijicon Night Set for the Walther pistol is the best night sight on the market.

In fact:

Every optic I’ve bought from them (especially the Trijicon RMR) is proven and tested to be bright, accurate, and durable.

Let’s take a closer look!

Brightness

The Trijicon Night Sight Set is very bright.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT FIBER OPTIC

The night sights contain three tritium vials for low light shooting, one in the front sight and two in the rear. It comes with three color options.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT MOUNTED

The Bright and Tough features a white ring around the glowing dots for daylight visibility. Then you’ve got either the HD Orange Front Outline or the HD Yellow Front Outline. Both are designed to improve visibility and target acquisition— even in transitional lighting.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT ORANGE AND YELLOW

I particularly like the HD Orange Front Outline because the orange dot is super easy to see at the range in daylight. My only gripe is that I wish the rear night sights for this option also had white to help.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT FIBER OPTIC

Iron sights can be challenging because they require a minimum of three points of alignment— unlike the best reflex sights (which only require one).

I find that the Bright & Tough version is just as good for quick target acquisition. It glows bright white in the daylight and very green in the dark. You won’t get disappointed!

Windage Adjustments

The Trijicon Night Sight Set comes with windage adjustments.

The night sights use the stock screw (which is reverse threaded), and as a result, the rear remains fully adjustable for windage.

Getting them back to a true zero was a bit of a task. I was able to get mine to a close zero but my shots were slightly lower than I expected. After doing some research I figured out why:

The Trijicon HD night sight is slightly taller than the stock sight which resulted in a lower point of impact (POI) than my stock setup.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT MOUNTED (2)

Nonetheless, the point of impact at the range was identical to the factory night sights at 25 feet using a “combat sight picture” with the front sight covering the target bull’s eye. If you use a “6 o’clock sight picture” the shots will group slightly low.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT DAYLIGHT VISUAL

I’ve seen this to be an issue for a lot of shooters, so keep that in mind.

After a bit of adjustment and compensation, I put 200 rounds through my Walther PPQ M2 and it shot accurately.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT OVERVIEW

Accuracy

The Trijicon Night sights let me fire accurate shots much more compared to just the regular pistol sights.

Trijicon Night Sights Visual

It comes with a specifically designed U-shaped rear notch that enhances front sight acquisition.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT REAR PART

Both the front and the rear sights co-witnessed with each other perfectly. Every shot I took landed with superior accuracy.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT MOUNTED

This is the very reason I use this great night sight on all of my handguns. except on my AR pistol. For that, I use the best optic for AR pistol.

Durability

The Trijicon Night Sights are extremely durable.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT REAR PART (1)

Each Trijicon tritium lamp is capped with a sapphire jewel which helps distribute light evenly and acts as added protection against harsh solvents.

The lamps are enclosed within protective aluminum cylinders, which makes them resistant to all kinds of recoil, rust, and corrosion.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT ORANGE AND YELLOW

The Trijicon rear sights are snug and there was no problem with change of impact after 500 rounds.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT (1)

Mounting & Installation

Let me start by saying: this was the easiest sight change I’ve done in a gun.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT MOUNTED

The simple installation took about 10 minutes. No sight pusher needed.

I used Loctite Heavy Duty Threadlocker to secure the front sight as it has improved oil resistance over the standard 242. The Trijicon night sight fit perfectly on the Walther PPQ M2 and had zero wobbles.

Are the Trijicon Night Set Sights worth it?

If you’re looking for a balance of speed and precision in a durable package, I highly recommend the Trijicon Night Set Sights.

Why? It’s got:

  • Exceptional brightness
  • Quick and easy installation
  • Excellent durability and construction
  • Emergency manipulation of the Slide

On top of that, the sight is backed by Trijicon for 12 years from tritium lamps’ date of manufacture.

TRIJICON NIGHT SIGHT

Overall, the Trijicon Night Set Sights are fantastic sights for self-defense, competition shooting, or for anyone simply looking to upgrade the iron sights.

3. TRUGLO Tritium Pro: Best for the Budget

If you want brightness and accuracy without costing you an arm and a leg, the TRUGLO Tritium Pro is the answer.

It’s definitely the “you get more than what you pay for” kind of sight.

What makes me say that? Let’s find out…

Brightness

The TRUGLO Tritium Pro is made from high-quality, swiss-made tritium for maximum brightness.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO MOUNTED

The front sight comes with a white Focus-Lock ring surrounding the front fiber for better visibility.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO FRONT FIBER OPTIC

The sights transition from standard white dot sights during the daylight, to glowing green dots in the dark— no batteries or low light exposure required.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO FIBER OPTIC BRIGHTNESS

At night, the dot is not bright enough to disturb sleep but I can also easily spot my carry pistol if needed.

Accuracy

The TRUGLO Tritium Pro features reliable accuracy.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO REAR PART (1)

At the range, it’s effective across distances ranging from 10 to 25 yards out.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO EYE RELIEF

If you’re someone who is dealing with failing or irregular eyesight, you won’t have a hard time with the TRUGLO Tritium Pro.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO OVERVIEW

Yes, it’s not as high-end as prism scopes like the Vortex Spitfire 3x, but you can still fire an accurate shot.

Durability

The TRUGLO Tritium Pro is compact and lightweight.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO FRONT FIBER OPTIC (1)

Tritium’s Fortress Finish provides a long-lasting protective coating for maximum protection against harsh conditions.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO REAR PART

Plus: its angled rear edge is helpful for emergency one-hand operations.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO MOUNTED (1)

Mounting & Installation

Unfortunately, these sights are difficult to install on the Walther PPQ M2 pistol.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO MOUNTED

The Walther PPQ M2 night sights had the traditional reverse-thread screw and plunger. The Tritium Pro sights neither use the screw nor have a pinpoint for the plunger, making it difficult to secure the sight.

If you’re installing this yourself, remove material from the sides until it fits snug. You can then lock everything in place. The Walther PPQ M2 doesn’t use a typical dovetail and you don’t want to damage it by forcing the sight in.

TRUGLO TRITIUM PRO FRONT FIBER OPTIC (1)

However: I strongly recommend getting a gunsmith or armorer to do this for you.

Based on TRUGLO’s warranty information: handgun sights must be installed by a licensed gunsmith using a “sight press”. It’s said that all other methods of installation will void this warranty.

Is the TRUGLO Tritium Pro worth it?

If you’re a newbie looking to get an affordable yet dependable sight, I recommend getting the TRUGLO Tritium Pro.

Why? It’s got:

  • Reliable Accuracy
  • Exceptional Brightness
  • Rust and corrosion-resistant build
  • Visible in broad daylight and low-light conditions

Also, TRUGLO covers all their handgun sights for a period of 12 years from the date of the original manufacturing.

Overall, The Tritium Pro is a budget-friendly option for self-defense and QCB target shooting.

4. TRUGLO TFX: Best Fiber Optic Sights

The TRUGLO TFX is the best fiber optic sight for your Walther PPQ M2.

But wait, that’s not all:

Most pistol sights usually come with two options: tritium lamps or fiber optics. The TRUGLO TFX has both!

This sight features day and night brightness plus accurate shooting rolled into one nice little package

Interested? Keep reading…

Brightness

Both the Walther tritium night sights and fiber optics on the TRUGLO TFX provide high visibility.

TruGlo TFO Overview

The tritium glow is great in low light conditions, and the fiber glows fully in bright light conditions.

TRUGLO TFO GREEN LIGHT

I don’t know about you but I really like having two options to work with. It’s the same reason that made me buy the Vortex Strikefire 2.

The front sights’ white ring really grabs your focus and allows you to quickly acquire your target. The rear has black retention rings to help assist in fast acquisition as well.

TRUGLO TFO OVERVIEW (2)

On a side note:

I actually have a similar version: the TRUGLO TFO. It doesn’t come with a Walther PPQ M2 option but it’s one of the best M&P shield night sights in my arsenal.

Accuracy

With proper installation and practice, the TRUGLO TFX is very accurate.

TruGlo TFO Visual

The U-shape notch in the rear is well-built with minimal light escaping on the edges. You can easily line your front sight to sit in the U shape.

TUGLO TFO EYE RELIEF

If you suffer from issues like astigmatism or have old eyes, I typically recommend using an HWS like the EOTECH EXPS 3. But, you can actually get accurate shots with the TRUGLO TFX.

Like all of TRUGLO’s sights, the TFX is designed for a “combat” POI result at 25-yards. This may be an issue for those who are looking to keep the POA & POI the same as their stock sights.

TRUGLO TFO

BUT— I promise the adjustment is small and well worth the technology.

Durability

The TRUGLO TFX Pro sights are robust and the finish is great.

The lamps are encased inside a practically indestructible chemical and shock-resistant housing.

Plus, the CNC-machined steel is protected with rust-resistant thanks to Trijicon’s Fortress Finish.

Mounting & Installation

The main drawback: installing the TRUGLO TFX was a bit challenging.

TruGlo TFO Overview

The rear sight would not slide into position like the original stock piece. I had to gently file a slight amount off on both sides of the slide base in order to get the TFX rear into position.

TRUGLO TFO OVERVIEW (2)

On the other hand, the TRUGLO TFX is easy to use for holstering, which is critical to me.

TruGlo TFO Visual

As with any of TRUGLO’s sights, I highly recommend having a gunsmith do it for you. If it breaks, TRUGLO will not replace it if due to improper installation.

I know, it’s a bummer.

Is the TRUGLO TFX worth it?

If you’re a concealed carry user looking for an upgraded and more accurate pair of sights, the TRUGLO TFX is for you.

Why? It’s got:

  • Pinpoint accuracy
  • Sturdy construction
  • Affordable Price Tag
  • Excellent Visibility (Day and Night)

Also, the TRUGLO TFX is covered by a 12-year warranty. You just need to supply a copy of the sales receipt at the time warranty service is requested. No additional warranty “registration” is required.

Overall, the TRUGLO TFX is a great multi-purpose sight that provides premium features at a decent cost.

Now It’s Your Turn

I hope you enjoyed my Best Sights for Walther PPQ M2 guide.

Now I want to turn it over to you:

Which sight will you pick for your Walther PPQ M2? Or perhaps you already have one and would like to share your thoughts.

Either way, let me know by leaving a quick comment down below.

FAQ:

Are Tritium sights harmful?

Tritium sights — a radioactive material that emits a very weak beta particle — is not harmful because the bright tritium night sight is contained and sealed. Therefore, there is no risk for radiation exposure.

How long do Trijicon night sights last?

The green tritium lamp is should last twelve years from the date of original manufacture. For the Bright & Tough Night Sights, the yellow lamp is guaranteed for 12 years and the orange lamp is warranted for 5 years from the date of original manufacture.

Who makes sights for the Walther PPQ M2?

There are many several manufacturers who sell sights with different features and colors for Walther pistols. The most common companies include Trijicon, TRUGLO, Meprolight, Dawson Precision, and XS Sight Systems.

Can you put a red dot on a Walther PPQ M2?

Yes! Walther pistols recently introduced the Q5 Steel Frame and Q4 Steel Frame models which come optic-ready from the factory. There are older models that are not factory set up to accept red dot sights but can be milled for Red Dot mounting: including the Walther PPQ 4” and 5” Slide versions both 9mm, .40cal, and .45ACP (Including PPQ Navy SD). Walther recommends having your PPQ or PPS milled for an optic by C&H that way you still maintain Lifetime Warranty coverage.

You can also buy Evolution Gun Works’ mounting plates on Amazon. They have a specific mounting plate for the best Vortex red dot sights

No products found.

Also, there is an EGW mounting option for the RMR and Holosun red dots.

No products found.

Do night sights only work at night?

Not necessarily. You can use many of the night sights during the day and still get an accurate shot within a reasonable distance. One of my favorite features about the TFX Pro (mentioned above) is the combination of tritium and fiber optics. This optic combo ensures I’m well-equipped to handle any self-defense scenario regardless of low light conditions.
