Everything You Need to Know about Quick Detach Scope Mounts

Manufacturers designed scope mounts for an important purpose:

If your sight were to fail, you’d be able to quickly detach it— allowing you to use your factory sights or best backup iron sights. You can spend thousands on your rifle and scope but in order for it to work, you need to attach it to your rifle.

This is where scope mounts come into play.

As with accessories, there are different kinds. You’ll find one-piece Qd mounts, scope rings, and other options that are all dependent on your usage and application.

For example:

The top receivers on AR-15’s are too short to get a good Qd scope mount using two piece rings. The one piece cantilever designs will give you proper scope height and distance from your eye while keeping the whole Qd mount on the upper receiver.

On the other hand, many one piece bases— particularly on short action receivers— only use three screws rather than four. They have less shear strength than the 4 screws used on two piece bases.

Also:

A two piece base will be lighter than a one piece base and allow more room for loading. However, professionally installed and high-quality two-piece Qd mounts will function the same in terms of accuracy and eye relief.

So this begs the question: how can you find a high-quality Qd mount?

Things to Consider When Buying a Qd Mount

In general, you want a Qd scope mount that fits securely and precisely plus performs consistently whenever you switch or reinstall your optic.

In order to find the best scope mounts, here’s what you need to consider…

Size

Picking the right size and length depends on the objective lens diameter of the scope you intend to mount on your Picatinny rails. Shooting preference can also play a role.

There are three main different sizes— low, medium, and high Qd scope mount height options.

Usually, traditional rifle stocks don’t have adjustable cheek pieces. Keeping the scope low in relation to the barrel helps you maintain the correct cheek weld.

High Qd scope mounts will benefit you if you like to utilize your iron sights with/or in place of a scope. They allow the needed clearance for iron sights and give you the choice to switch back and forth with your scope when shooting.

Generally speaking, measure and use the lowest rings that allow your scope to clear the receiver/barrel of the rifle.

A great rule of thumb:

For scopes with a diameter of 40mm and below, use a low quick detach scope mount. A medium Qd mount will work for the 42mm-45mm range, and for 50mm and higher: use a high scope mount.

Weight

The last thing you want is a large, heavy quick detach scope mount adding unnecessary weight to your gear.

Using lightweight Qd scope mounts on your setup allows you to shoot longer. Not only are you overcoming exhaustion, but you’ll also be enjoying more time out in nature.

Weight can be determined by what kind of material was used to construct the quick detach scope mount.

Although we favor less weight, we need to ensure durability and structural integrity isn’t sacrificed.

This brings me to my next point…

Construction

Many of the Qd scope mounts on the market are made with varying grades of material.

I personally look for aircraft-grade aluminum, because it doesn’t bend or twist under pressure or weight

A durable scope mount allows you to shoot hundreds of rounds without having to re-zero. Great quality equals a product that can withstand knocks and scrapes regardless of use.

Speaking of…

Operation

Here’s the goal: smooth operation and easy installation. We all have busy schedules, and even the setup sloths don’t always have time.

Since we’re talking about quick detach scope mounts, you should look for one that —obviously—detaches quickly and easily.

If your main concern is long eye relief, look for a quick detach scope mount with an extended cantilever so you can push the scope to the front of the rifle.

Great quality is typically more expensive. This leads us to the last consideration…

Price

Many big-name brands have big dollar signs attached to them. That doesn’t mean you have to go broke buying a QD scope mount.

If you’re only using the QD scope mount occasionally or for light operations, products on the lower end of the price range are acceptable.

If you switch up your scope regularly, it might be worth paying more for an adaptable product.

Plus, paying extra for higher quality materials and better warranty plans means you can use it for more rugged operations. If you’re the type that goes hunting in the backcountry, you don’t want a Qd mount that falls off while you’re walking through the woods.

On that note:

If you want to be prepared for every possible hunting situation, take a look at the best reflex sights in this review.

Conclusion

I get it. It’s hard to find a good quick detach scope mount that provides all of these awesome features without having to break the bank.

In this guide, I’ll give you all the information you need to buy the best QD scope mount.

3. Warne 1 Inch Quick Detach Scope Rings: Best for the Budget

Warne takes pride in making affordable, top of line Qd mounts which is why these 1 inch quick detach scope rings didn’t come as a surprise.

Best for the Budget
Warne 1 Inch Quick Detach Rings Medium Matte 201LM, Black
  • Ring Height: Med .375 inches
  • Quick Detach: 1"
  • Color: Matte

In fact:

This is the second pair of Warne QD rings I have. These rings are solid, hold zero, and are a breeze to install.

Let’s check it out…

Quality

The Warne 1 Inch QD rings are rock-solid.

WARNE 1-INCH QD SCOPE RINGS (2)

The scope mount is constructed using steel and comes in either a silver, matte black or gloss black finish.

WARNE 1-INCH QD SCOPE RINGS (3)

The Warne Quick detach scope rings are available in three diameters: 1 inch, 30mm or 34mm. You can get them in different height settings from low to ultra high.

Weighing in at 4.9 ounces, it’s the lightest scope mount in this guide.

WARNE 1-INCH QD SCOPE RINGS (1)

Also, the rings do zero back pretty well. I can break down and clean my Mini 14 (removing the scope from the rail) and place it back on with confidence it’ll shoot accurately.

Take note:

These rings are a little bit different compared to other mounts. They’re two piece scope rings that need to be threaded, unlike one motion levers we’ve previously discussed.

WARNE 1-INCH QD SCOPE RINGS (2)

For me, these are plenty quick, especially given the durability and quality you get with them.

Installation

I’ve mounted my best leupold rifle scopes using the Warne 1 inch QD rings. My only comment is I had zero issues.

The rings secure the optic using 4 Torx style socket cap screws. I wish they had split them on the horizontal plane, but other than that, these are very nice.

WARNE 1-INCH QD SCOPE RINGS (1)

The Warne 1” QR scope rings come with an indexable quick-release lever system. This is a great feature as it allows for customizable lever positions.

The lever system can be tightened and then repositioned to keep them out of the way using a spring loaded mechanism inside each lever handle.

Price

After seeing the $60 price tag, it made me skeptical.

Best for the Budget
Warne 1 Inch Quick Detach Rings Medium Matte 201LM, Black
  • Ring Height: Med .375 inches
  • Quick Detach: 1"
  • Color: Matte

But after I gave these rings a try, I’m a fan now. The Warne 1” QD scope rings won’t leave a hole in your pocket (or your heart).

Are the Warne 1 Inch Quick Detach Scope Rings worth it?

If you need a no-nonsense scope mount for your rifle, the Warne 1” QD scope rings are an excellent choice.

Best for the Budget
Warne 1 Inch Quick Detach Rings Medium Matte 201LM, Black

4. Vortex Optics Precision Quick-Release Extended Cantilever 30mm Riflescope Mount: Best 30mm Quick Release Scope Mount

Vortex takes pride in delivering high-quality, affordable, and respectable hunting and shooting accessories.

In fact:

I can’t think of a time I was disappointed with any of their products. The Vortex Quick-Release QD mount is no exception.

Best 30mm Quick Release Scope Mount
Vortex Optics Precision Quick-Release Extended Cantilever 30mm Riflescope Mount - 2-Inch Offset
  • This quick-release cantilever mount is designed for mounting telescopic sights with 30mm tubes onto a flattop style rifle.
  • The offset of this cantilever mount positions the scope in a forward location, providing correct eye relief and head placement when used on your rifle.
  • This mount positions the center of the riflescope tube at a height of 1.45 inches (37 mm) from the top surface of the Picatinny base.

Keep reading to learn why…

Quality

This Vortex scope mount is as robust as the iron throne in King’s landing.

Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but the overall build or the materials are worth the appreciation.

The Vortex Precision Quick-release mount is machined with 6061 T6 aluminum detailed with a tough coat of type 3 mil-spec. The rings can handle severe recoil or shock.

As a result of the cantilever design: you obtain maximum eye relief, reduce fatigue, and can shoot your shot with utmost accuracy.

At 8.9 ounces, this is the heaviest QD mount on the list. If you’re a weight fanatic, they’re a little heavy – but why skimp on quality over a few ounces?

Installation

Vortex reigns in designing versatile, easy to install mounting system for their optics and red dots (like the Sparc and Strikefire).

My only gripe with this scope mount is that the locking adjustment takes a bit of time to set up correctly.

Also, if you over tighten it, they can be really hard to release. Even a 1/16 of a turn on the tension nut can be the difference between perfect and too tight. I’ve had mine loosen up the first time, slightly causing minor movement issues.

BUT:

Once installed, the Vortex Precision QR scope mount doesn’t budge. I’m very happy with this setup.

Price

The Vortex QR mount happens to be the highest-priced option on this guide, but it addresses a lot of issues.

By saving both time and expense, the $250 price tag justifies itself.

FAQ

Do quick detach scope mounts hold zero?

High-quality quick detach scope mounts should have the ability to hold zero even after they’re detached and reattached. All scope mounts mentioned in this guide hold close to zero.

Are Weaver and Picatinny rail mounts the same?

Weaver and Picatinny Qd mounts look almost the same to the naked eye. There are some distinct differences. The recoil groove width of a Picatinny rail is 0.206 inches while the weaver rail measures 0.180 inches.

Also, Picatinny recoil groove centers are spaced consistently at 0.394 inches. Weaver has variable recoil groove centers. Because of this, Picatinny accessories don’t always fit on a Weaver rail but Weaver accessories almost always fit a Picatinny rail.

Are quick detach scope mounts universal?

There are some QD mounts that are designed for use with a specific scope or sight. But thanks to modern technology, there are universal scope mounts on the market.

The best way to know if it fits your firearm is by determining three main aspects.

1. The type of rail on your rifle: Many scope mounts will specify if they’re adaptable to Picatinny rails, Weaver-style, or universal rails.
2. Ring size: Usually, the rings on a Qd mount are designed for a specific diameter— like one inch or 30mm.
3. Ring spacing: Usually the application dictates the spacing, but I set them as far apart as possible for greater stability.

  1. Which of the two Burris units pictured did you test for return to zero? One requires 65 inch/lbs of torque on the nut, the other uses throw levers. My POI shifts 2 full mils using the AR-PEPR 30. The POI shift and time to swap/torque between a thermal and a Burris-mounted optic is infuriating.
