Are you just getting started in PRS or budget conscious and need the best long range scope you can find? The Athlon Optics Argos BTR GEN2 is the answer.
Not only is it versatile and easy to use, but it has top of the line features for a third of the cost!
It’s the second generation of the Athlon Optics Argos BTR and has gotten some serious upgrades from the previous model (which was already stellar!).
What makes it so amazing? Keep reading to find out.
Here’s my Athlon Optics Argos BTR GEN2 Review
This scope has it all at a budget friendly price.
In fact:
It’s one of the best long range scopes and the simple reticle makes it easy for beginners.
Here’s why…
Glass Clarity & Reticle
The glass on this scope is crystal clear from edge to edge.
It is fully multicoated, which means you get a much brighter image than you would from a single coated lens.
The best thing about this scope is the APLR2 FFP IR MOA reticle. First focal plane means that the reticle shrinks or grows when you zoom in or out.
What makes that the best?
This is a feature that’s usually only found on high end scopes! It makes target acquisition quick and precise at long range.
Not only that, but the reticle is illuminated for low light hunting on par with some of the red dot scopes out there.
Eye Relief & Eye Box
I did find the eye relief on this scope to be a little tight at 3.3”.
All that means is that I had to keep a good cheek weld, which is something you should be doing anyway.
The wide field of view you get from the eye box more than makes up for the eye relief. No need to adjust eye position when you can easily keep your target centered.
Durability
Athlon Optics is known for their quality scopes and this one is no different.
It is an aircraft grade aluminum tube and has an exclusive XPL coating. What that does is protect the lens from any kind of dirt, grease, or damage.
On top of that, it’s waterproof, shockproof, and fogproof.
I take this on all my hunting trips, which means it’s dealt with a fair amount of harsh conditions. From dropping it and banging it on trees to bouncing around in the back of the truck, this scope has done it all and still performs perfectly.
Not to mention it comes with a lifetime warranty, just in case something happens to it.
Elevation & Windage Knobs
The Athlon Optics Argos BTR GEN2 has ¼ MOA click turrets with 60 MOA total adjustment.
One of the upgrades from the previous version is these turrets. On the first model, the turrets were a little mushy. Not so on the GEN2!
This scope has very audible and tactile clicks for smooth adjustment.
Another benefit of this scope is the Precision Zero Stop system. Not only was I able to get this scope zeroed after 3 shots, but I was able to lock it down.
A few months and hundreds of rounds later and it’s still holding zero for me.
Parallax & Magnification
With a 6-24X magnification, this scope is very versatile.
I have mine mounted on a 6.5 Creedmoor and can shoot out to 1000 yards with clarity.
The one downside is that I noticed it loses a little bit of clarity at the highest magnifications, but for the price it’s still exceptional.
You don’t have to worry about parallax either, because it has a side focus and can be adjusted 10 yards out to infinity!
Mounting & Rings
While this scope doesn’t come with any rings or mount, it does come with a battery, cloth, and lens caps.
To mount it, I used the Athlon Optics 30mm rings.
- Made in USA and machined into the cross-bolt, this ultra durable recoil lug eliminates ring shift in picatinny and weaver cross slots.
- The optimum balance of weight savings and retention.
- Aircraft Grade Aluminum provide extra strength and durability to handle the toughest terrain and offers lifetime of use.
I also added on an Athlon Optics Riflescope Sunshade.
The sunshade helps reduce reflections in sunny conditions and, paired with the illuminated reticle, makes it easy to target smaller prey while varmint hunting.

Greta review again! and great scope for the price. Athlon Argos has been a great shooter on both my 300 Win mag, and 30-06. I’ve had the Gen 1 version on my 300 WM since 2017 with no issues. But recently picked up the Gen 2 for my .06. Love them both so far. For the money! Athlon scopes will be on par or out perform Vortex, Nightforce, Primary Arms etc. Oh and for 1/3 to 1/2 the price! thanks again.
