Aimpoint ACRO Review: Original Publishing Date: 2024-12-18
Back when I first started running red dots on pistols, I had this Vortex Venom on my Glock 19. Great sight until that rainy match where water pooled on the lens and I couldn’t see anything. Lost that stage badly. That’s when I knew I needed something enclosed.
I’ve been running Aimpoint ACROs for about three years now. Started with the P-1 on my duty gun, then grabbed the P-2 when it came out. Recently picked up the C-2 for my AR and the S-2 for turkey season.
After testing way too many enclosed dots (my credit card still hurts), I narrowed it down to these three. The ACRO P-2 gets my vote for most shooters. It’s bombproof, the battery lasts forever, and it just works no matter what Mother Nature throws at it.

Let me walk you through what makes each one tick and which setup they actually work best on.
Everything I Recommend
- Best for Duty Pistols: Aimpoint ACRO P-2
- Best for AR-15 Platforms: Aimpoint ACRO C-2
- Best for Shotgun Hunting: Aimpoint ACRO S-2
Aimpoint ACRO P-2: Best for Duty Pistols
The P-2 sits on my Glock 19 every day. That enclosed emitter is the real deal. Last month during qualifications, it was pouring rain and everyone with open dots was struggling. My dot stayed crystal clear.
The 3.5 MOA dot hits that sweet spot. Big enough to pick up fast but small enough for precision work. I’ve put this thing through absolute hell and it keeps ticking.
Aimpoint ACRO C-2: Best for AR-15 Platforms
I wanted a compact optic that didn’t sacrifice performance, and the C-2 delivers exactly that. The 2.5 MOA dot gives me precision when I need it while staying fast up close. For an AR setup where weight and profile matter but accuracy can’t suffer, this is my pick.
The C-2 changed my AR game completely. That 2.5 MOA dot lets me nail steel at 100 yards but still works great for close stuff. The profile is super low, which I love.
What really sold me was swapping batteries without losing zero. I tested it myself with a laser bore sight. Changed the battery three times and the zero never moved.
Aimpoint ACRO S-2: Best for Shotgun Hunting
Turkey hunting with the S-2 is almost unfair. That big 9 MOA dot makes it stupid easy to center up on a gobbler’s head. First morning I used it, I dropped a tom at 38 yards like it was nothing.
The mount fits right on the rib without any gunsmithing. Zero holds through all those heavy turkey loads too.

Accuracy
The first time I mounted the P-2 on my Glock, I noticed the height difference right away. Took me about two magazines to adjust my presentation. Now it’s second nature.
At 25 yards, I’m stacking rounds into groups about the size of a golf ball. The 3.5 MOA dot covers less target than I expected. During department qualification, I shot my best score ever with this thing.

What really surprised me was how well it worked in the rain. Had a training day where it absolutely poured. My buddy’s RMR was useless but my dot stayed perfect. Made me a believer in enclosed emitters right there.
Battery Life
I installed my battery in January 2023. It’s still going strong. I leave it on setting 6 all day, every day.

The peace of mind is huge. No more carrying spare batteries in my vest. No more monthly battery checks on the schedule. Just set it and forget it for years.
One thing I learned the hard way with my old P-1 was to mark the battery install date with a Sharpie on the housing. Makes it easy to track when you’re due for a change.
Durability
This optic has taken some serious abuse. Dropped it on concrete getting out of the patrol car once. The aluminum got a nice gouge but the zero stayed perfect.
During water rescue training, my whole belt went underwater for about five minutes. The P-2 worked fine afterward. No fog, no water inside, nothing. Try that with an open emitter.

The glass stays cleaner than I expected too. Lint from concealed carry doesn’t affect the dot like it did with my RMR. Just blow it off and keep going.
Ease of Use
The buttons are simple. Up arrow makes it brighter, down arrow dims it. Even with gloves on, I can work them fine.

Zeroing takes that little tool they give you. Each click moves the impact about an inch at 25 yards. Pretty standard stuff. Once you zero it, it stays put.
My only gripe is remembering which button is which in the dark. But muscle memory kicks in after a few weeks.
Optical Quality
The glass on this thing is ridiculous. Crystal clear with zero tint. Looking through cheaper dots afterward makes them look like you’re wearing sunglasses.

The dot stays round even on the brightest settings. My old Holosun would get all starburst-looking in bright sun. Not this one. Just a clean, crisp red circle.
Field of view through that window is better than it looks. Yeah, it’s smaller than some open emitters, but I pick up the dot instantly when I present the gun.
Accessories
The factory mount works but there’s better stuff out there for serious use.
- Night Fision Optic Plate: Rock solid mount for Glock MOS guns. Zero play, zero movement. Worth every penny.
- Scalarworks LEAP/03 Aimpoint ACRO Mount: If you want to run this on a PCC or rifle, this mount is the answer. Absolute cowitness height works perfect.

Summary
After running the P-2 daily for 18 months and burning through about 5,000 rounds, this thing has proven itself beyond any doubt. It’s the enclosed red dot everything else gets measured against.
The reliability is what sets it apart. Rain, dust, lint from concealed carry, none of it matters. That dot is there when you need it. Period. The battery life means I check it once a year instead of constantly worrying about it dying at the wrong time.
Yeah, it costs more than a Holosun or even an RMR. But this is your defensive pistol. The one that absolutely has to work. For me, that reliability is worth the extra cash. If you’re running a duty gun or serious defensive pistol, this is the dot you want.

Testing conducted using Federal Premium 55gr FMJ .223 ammunition on a standard 16-inch AR-15 carbine.
Accuracy
First range trip with the C-2 was eye opening. Zeroed it at 50 yards in about 10 rounds. The 3.5 MOA dot is perfect for an AR. Not too big, not too small.

Via-Mrgunsgear Channel
At 100 yards, I can hit a 6 inch plate all day long. The dot covers about 3.5 inches at that distance, so you still see plenty of target. For closer work, it’s lightning fast.
I ran some drills against my buddy’s Eotech. My splits were just as fast but I had way better hits at distance. That crisp dot beats a fuzzy circle any day. Plus the C-2 is half the weight.
Battery Life
Eight months in and I haven’t touched the battery. Still running strong on setting 6 for most of my shooting.
The top loading battery is genius. Pop the old one out, drop a new one in, and your zero stays perfect. I checked it with my bore laser just to be sure. No shift at all.

Via-Mrgunsngear Channel
I keep a spare CR2032 in my grip compartment. Probably won’t need it for years but it’s nice knowing it’s there.
Durability
I’m not gentle with my gear. This C-2 has been dropped, banged around in the truck, and shot in the rain. Still works perfect.
Took it prairie dog hunting last summer. Dust everywhere, 100 degree heat. The enclosed design kept all that crap out. My shooting partner’s open dot was constantly getting fouled up.

Via-Mrgunsngear Channel
After 2,000 rounds of mixed ammo, including some hot handloads, the zero hasn’t budged. The aluminum housing has some scratches but that’s just character.
Ease of Use
Two buttons control everything. Simple as it gets. Even my wife figured it out in seconds when she shot my rifle.
The adjustment tool is kind of annoying to keep track of. I taped mine inside my grip. Each click is exactly 1 MOA which makes zeroing math easy.

Via-Mrgunsngear Channel
Finding the dot is instant. That big window and low mount height means it’s right there when you shoulder the rifle. Way faster than trying to find the reticle in a scope.
Optical Quality
The glass clarity beats every other red dot I’ve owned. No blue tint like my old Sig Romeo. Just clear, sharp glass.

Via-Mrgunsngear Channel
Even on setting 10, the dot stays crisp. No blooming or starbursting. In bright Texas sun, it cuts through without washing out.
Side by side with a Primary Arms dot, the difference is obvious. The Aimpoint glass is just cleaner. Worth the extra money for that alone.
Accessories
The stock mount works but these upgrades make it even better.
- Reptilia DOT Mount for Aimpoint ACRO: Lower profile than stock and extremely durable. Perfect for keeping the sight picture low.
- Scalarworks LEAP/ACRO Mount: Quick detach if you swap optics between rifles. Returns to zero every time.

Summary
The C-2 earned its permanent spot on my main AR after three months of hard use. It does everything a red dot should do without any of the common problems.
The enclosed design is a game changer for real world use. No more babying your optic or worrying about weather. The battery life is insane and the glass quality puts cheaper options to shame. It’s lighter than most alternatives too, especially compared to the P-2.
Is it expensive? Sure. But I’ve wasted more money buying three cheap dots that failed. Get this once and be done with it. For any serious AR build, the C-2 is worth every penny.

Testing conducted using Federal Premium 12-gauge 2¾-inch #6 shot and Winchester AA 12-gauge 2¾-inch #7½ shot. All tests performed on ventilated rib shotgun platforms.
Brightness
First turkey hunt with the S-2 was a learning experience. Started in the dark on setting 2. Could barely see it, which was perfect. Didn’t want to spook anything coming in.

Via-Aimpoint USA
As the sun came up, I bumped it to setting 5, then 7. That big dot stayed visible without being obnoxious. By noon I had it cranked to 9 for some coyote calling in bright fields.
The buttons are easy to find without looking. Changed settings while tracking a gobbler through thick timber. Never lost sight of him while adjusting brightness.
Accuracy
My first turkey with this sight was at 42 yards. Put that 9 MOA dot on his neck and dropped him clean. The dot size is perfect for turkey heads and necks.

Via-Aimpoint USA
Coyote hunting showed me what this thing can really do. Nailed one at 50 yards with Federal 00 buck. The dot made it easy to lead him just right as he trotted across the field.
For ducks and doves, it’s almost cheating. That big dot picks up birds way faster than a bead. My hit percentage on crossing shots went up probably 30 percent.
Durability
Three months of hard hunting and this sight looks almost new. It’s been rained on, muddy, and knocked around in the truck bed.
The enclosed design is perfect for shotgun hunting. Crawling through wet grass after turkeys used to fog up my old red dot. Not this one. Stays clear no matter what.

Via-Aimpoint USA
After 500 rounds of turkey loads and buckshot, zero is still perfect. That’s impressive considering how hard those 3.5 inch magnums hit.
Mounting Installation
Installation was easier than I expected. Took about 20 minutes total. The base plates are clearly marked for different rib sizes.
Getting it centered on the rib was simple. Just eyeball it down the barrel and tighten the screws. The low mount height means my cheek weld didn’t change at all.

Via-Aimpoint USA
Only annoying part is needing that tool for adjustments. But once it’s zeroed, you never touch it again. Mine’s been perfect since day one.
Accessories
Not much needed but these help in the field.
- Burris Lens Pen: Keeps the glass spotless during wet hunts. Way better than using your shirt.
- CR2032 Battery Pack: I keep extras in my turkey vest just in case, though I haven’t needed them yet.
By the Numbers
Brightness
5/5

The 10 intensity settings cover everything from predawn setups to high-noon dove fields, and the dot never washes out when you need it most.
Accuracy
5/5

That 9 MOA dot gives you the perfect balance for quick shots on moving game and precise holds on stationary targets—my kill rate improved noticeably.
Durability
5/5

After hundreds of rounds and real abuse in the field, this thing hasn’t shifted zero or shown any weakness—it’s built to last.
Mounting Installation
4/5

The base plate system fits most ribs easily and the low mount keeps your gun handling natural, though tool-required adjustments slow down zeroing a bit.
Overall
4.8/5

Summary
The S-2 completely changed my shotgun game. Turkey hunting is way more consistent now. I can put that dot exactly where I want the pattern to hit instead of guessing with a bead.
For predators, it’s even better. Tracking running coyotes or hogs is so much easier with that bright 9 MOA dot. My success rate on moving shots has gone way up.
It’s not cheap, but neither is gas and time spent missing birds. The improvement in my hunting success paid for this sight in one season. If you’re serious about shotgun hunting, especially turkeys, the S-2 is a game changer.
Which ACRO To Buy?
Before investing in an ACRO red dot sight, you need to understand which features matter for your specific use case. While all ACRO models share core DNA, subtle differences can significantly impact your shooting experience. Here’s what matters when making your choice.
Dot Size and Intended Use
Your shooting application should drive your dot size selection. The 3.5 MOA dots on the P-2 and C-2 excel at precision work out to 100 yards while remaining quick to pick up. For shotgun sports or wing shooting, the S-2’s larger 9 MOA dot makes target acquisition lightning-fast, though it sacrifices some precision at distance.
Battery Life and Power Management
All ACRO models boast impressive 50,000-hour battery life, but how you manage power matters. Consider the brightness settings available – the P-2 and C-2 include night vision compatibility, while the S-2 focuses on daylight performance. The common CR2032 battery means you won’t hunt for obscure replacements.
Mounting Options and Compatibility
Check your firearm’s mounting options before purchasing. The P-2 works with most modern optics-ready pistols, while the C-2 needs proper AR-height mounts. The S-2’s specialized shotgun mounting system limits its versatility but excels in its intended role. Factor in the cost of quality mounts and backup sights.
Environmental Protection
Consider your operating environment. The P-2’s 35-meter water resistance might be overkill for range use but crucial for duty carry. All models handle dust and debris thanks to their enclosed design, but submersion ratings vary. Match the protection level to your real-world needs rather than specs alone.
Brightness Settings and Visibility
Think about when and where you’ll shoot. The P-2 and C-2 offer night vision compatibility crucial for low-light tactical use. The S-2’s daylight-optimized settings better serve hunters and sport shooters. More brightness settings aren’t always better—it’s about having the right range for your needs.
Size and Weight Considerations
Weight matters, especially on handguns. The P-2 and C-2’s compact size balances well on most platforms while the S-2’s slightly heavier build makes sense for shotguns. Remember, ounces are pounds and pounds are pain.
How I tested and scored
I didn’t just shoot a few groups and call it good. Each ACRO got months of real use in different conditions.
The P-2 went on my daily carry Glock 19 and backup Sig P320. I shot about 2,000 rounds total, everything from cheap steel case to defensive hollow points. Tested it in rain, dust, and temperature swings from 15°F to 95°F.
For drop testing, I knocked it off the bench onto concrete twice. Also fell out of my holster onto asphalt once (not on purpose). Checked zero after each drop with a laser bore sight.

The C-2 got mounted on two different ARs. A 16 inch carbine and a 10.5 inch pistol. Put about 1,500 rounds through it, mostly 55 grain FMJ but some 77 grain match ammo too.
Accuracy testing happened at 25, 50, 100, and 200 yards. Measured group sizes and recorded them. Also timed target acquisition drills to see how fast I could get on target.

The S-2 went on my Benelli Super Black Eagle for duck season and my Mossberg 500 for turkeys. Real world hunting, not just range time. Tracked my hit percentages before and after mounting it.
Temperature testing involved leaving optics in my truck overnight in winter, then bringing them inside. Checked for fogging and condensation. Also left them in direct sun during 95°F days to test heat resistance.
I looked at other options too. The Holosun EPS seemed promising but the glass quality wasn’t there. Too much distortion at the edges and the dot got fuzzy on high settings.
The Trijicon RMRcc is solid but it’s an open emitter. During rain testing, water pooled on the lens and killed the dot. Deal breaker for duty use.
Each optic got scored on real performance, not spec sheets. Zero retention, battery life, durability, and how they actually performed in the field. No paid reviews, no BS, just honest testing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between the ACRO P-2, C-2, and S-2?
The P-2 is built for pistols with the deepest waterproof rating at 115 feet and an Acro mounting footprint. The C-2 mounts on rifles using Picatinny rails and has more daylight brightness options. The S-2 is made for shotguns with a bigger 9 MOA dot and integrated rib mount. Each one is optimized for its specific platform.
How long does the battery last on Aimpoint ACRO sights?
All three models run for 50,000 hours on one CR2032 battery. That’s over five years if you leave it on constantly. I’ve had mine running for 18 months straight without any issues. You’ll probably change the battery based on the calendar, not because it died.
Can I use the ACRO P-2 on a rifle?
You can mount a P-2 on a rifle with the right adapter plate. It works great on pistol caliber carbines and AR pistols. But honestly, the C-2 is better for rifles since it has more brightness settings and comes with a Picatinny mount. Save the P-2 for your handgun.
Is the 9 MOA dot on the S-2 too large for precision shooting?
For precision rifle work? Yeah, it’s too big. But for shotgun hunting, it’s perfect. You’re not trying to hit a dime at 100 yards with a shotgun. You need to get on a moving bird or running coyote fast. The 9 MOA dot is sized exactly right for that job.
Do I need tools to adjust windage and elevation on ACRO sights?
Yes, all three need the included tool for adjustments. Kind of annoying but it prevents your zero from getting bumped accidentally. Once you zero it, you probably won’t touch it again anyway. I keep the tool taped inside my grip just in case.
Are ACRO sights compatible with night vision?
The P-2 has 4 night vision settings and the C-2 has 2. They work great with NVGs according to my buddy who runs them. The S-2 doesn’t have dedicated NV settings since it’s meant for daytime hunting. If night vision matters to you, get the P-2 or C-2.
Why should you trust me
I’m Richard Douglas, founder of Scopes Field. I’ve been testing optics professionally for years and my work appears in major firearm publications. I’ve consulted for companies like Bushnell and Leupold on product development.
For this review, I spent three months beating the hell out of these ACROs. Over 5,000 rounds fired, multiple drop tests, and real hunting use. Not range queen testing, but actual field use in crappy conditions.

I bought all three optics with my own money. No free samples, no company influence. When I say something works or doesn’t, it’s based on real experience, not marketing materials.
I’ve made expensive mistakes buying the wrong optics over the years. Now I test everything thoroughly so you don’t waste money like I did.
Conclusion
After months of testing, each ACRO proved itself in its intended role. The P-2 dominates on pistols, the C-2 excels on rifles, and the S-2 transforms shotgun hunting. But if I could only have one, it’d be the P-2 for its bombproof reliability.
What’s your experience with enclosed red dots? Running an ACRO or something else? Drop a comment and let me know what’s working for you.
